01. The Challenge

Complexity &
Constraints.

The Heritage Art Museum project involved expanding a historic site containing 300-year-old wooden structures protected by strict heritage laws. The challenge was to double the exhibition space without overshadowing the existing architecture or disrupting the serene Zen gardens that define the site's character. Museum-grade climate control and lighting are essential for preserving delicate ancient scrolls and silk paintings, but the existing structures lacked the insulation and infrastructure to support modern HVAC systems. We also had to navigate a complex circulation path; the museum needed to handle high tourist traffic without creating bottlenecks or destroying the contemplative atmosphere essential to the appreciation of the art. Excavation was risky due to potential archaeological finds in the soil.

02. The Solution

Innovative
Design Strategy.

We adopted a "subtractive" approach. Instead of building up, we built down. We designed a subterranean gallery wing located beneath the main courtyard, visible only through a series of sleek, low-profile glass skylights that emerge from the garden floor like sculptures. This preserved the visual dominance of the historic wooden buildings. To protect the artifacts, we created a "box within a box" structure underground, with advanced humidity control systems isolated from the visitor areas to prevent micro-climatic fluctuations. We used traditional Japanese materials—Hinoki cypress and hand-troweled plaster—but applied them with modern detailing to distinguish the new architecture from the old. A glass corridor connects the old wing to the new underground section, offering visitors a transition from the historical to the contemporary.

"A design that speaks functionally as well as aesthetically."

03. The Outcome

Exceptional Results.

The Heritage Art Museum has been praised for its humility and respect for history. The subterranean expansion effectively doubled the museum's capacity while remaining virtually invisible from the street, preserving the historic skyline of the district. The juxtaposition of the ancient wooden structures against the minimalist concrete and glass of the new wing creates a powerful dialogue between past and present. Curators have lauded the lighting design, which filters natural daylight through UV-protective layers, bringing out the true colors of the artwork without damaging them. Visitor flow has improved dramatically, with the underground loop allowing for a continuous narrative journey through the collection. The project demonstrates that modern architecture can enhance heritage sites by being quiet, respectful, and technologically advanced.
