The primary challenge for the Azure Cliff House was the site itself—a rugged, steep cliff face overlooking the Pacific Ocean with unstable soil conditions and exposure to harsh salt winds. The client desired a home that felt like an extension of the ocean, maximizing panoramic views while maintaining complete privacy from the street level. We faced strict coastal development regulations that limited the building's height and footprint. Additionally, the geological instability required a structural solution that could anchor the residence securely without destroying the natural beauty of the rock formation. There was also the challenge of regulating the internal temperature; large glass facades often lead to overheating, but the client insisted on floor-to-ceiling transparency. Balancing structural safety, environmental compliance, and the client's vision for an "invisible" home required a complete rethinking of traditional foundation systems.
Innovative
Design Strategy.
To address the geological constraints, we engineered a cantilevered structural system anchored deep into the bedrock using high-strength steel micro-piles. This allowed the house to "float" above the cliff edge rather than disturbing the landscape. For the facade, we utilized a custom-engineered, triple-glazed smart glass system that automatically tints in response to sunlight intensity, managing thermal gain while preserving the breathtaking views. We designed the roof as a "green roof" covered with native coastal succulents, which not only insulated the home but also camouflaged the structure when viewed from above, satisfying local zoning height restrictions. The layout was inverted; private suites were placed on the lower level, dug partially into the rock for thermal stability, while the open-plan living areas occupied the cantilevered upper deck to capture the horizon. A palette of raw concrete and weathered steel was chosen to withstand the corrosive sea air.
